RV Maintenance Tips from Pedata RV Center http://www.pedatarvcenter.com/rvservicevideos.html The videos at this website demonstrate some excellent tips you can benefit from. |
Does my trailer need to be inspected?
New Hampshire law requires all trailers with a registered weight of 3000lbs. or more, to be safety inspected. Inspections must be done in or prior to the month of June. .How do I know I need a "sticker" on my trailer?
Looking at your registration... in the lower left notice the weight stated under "GVWR"... if it reads 3000lbs. or more, you are required to have your trailer inspected.
GOOD NEWS! We are a licensed inspection station for New Hampshire!
Does my Tow Vehicle need a electronic brake control unit?
In the State of New Hampshire, if your travel trailer weighs 3,000lbs or more and is equipped with electric brakes, you are required to have an auxiliary brake control unit installed in your tow vehicle. The brake control unit syncs your vehicle and trailer braking systems allowing shorter, quicker stops in traffic. Here is a picture of a popular brake control unit. Quality parts start at $79.95 for the Brake Control and labor depends on the vehicle. Common packages (parts + labor) for a brake control installation runs about $250.

Inspecting the roof sealant on an RV is something you should do twice a year. Why?
Because that is the likely place that a water leak will first develop. Water runs downhill, of course, and a tiny leak on the roof will turn into a major problem within the structure of the RV.
Think about this - one drip per minute (through a pinhole leak) adds up to 1440 drips per day or 10,080 drips in a week.
I don't have time to figure out how many gallons of water there are in 10,080 drips, but I think you see my point.
Closely inspect the roof sealant condition on every protruding fixture on the roof. Any cracks or thin spots can be touched up with the appropriate material. If the roof sealant is peeling or flaking in any way, then the old coating must be physically removed.
On metal roofs I use a 1' wide scraper with a firm blade, like the ones used by auto technicians for scraping off old gaskets. For rubber roofs I made a similar sized plastic scraper that won't cut the rubber membrane.
If you heat the old coating with a hot air gun, it will come off fairly easily.
Rubber Roof Treatment & Cleaning
Cleaning a rubber roof should be done at least twice a year. Here we have some pictures of a 2004 travel trailer that was sitting under a pine tree at a local campground. Although it was washed before, it only takes several months for dirt and debris to cover the entire roof. (all materials are available at our store, and we also offer a full roof treatment service for approx $195)
I recommend spraying the roof down first and then using a medium to stiff bristled brush and Rubber Roof Cleaner to get the best effect. We have a product in parts store that cleans and protects the roof in one step. We had to stop this job to take pictures... Notice the incredible difference.
